Return to Rocky Shore
Return to Rocky Shore
Did we not after all come from the very same
rocky shorn and misty shore
but not to honor that by our return
in the final and forever more
In my memory I still see my father kneeling
his elbows on his thighs
and telling stories of sea born brothers
of dark waters and of grey stormy skies
Verified by searching in the seacoast towns
musty records and certified form
These favorite brothers turned away from the crown
becoming this new colony this country born
And so far from the shore these stories told
from a father never too near the sea
though yes they happened just as told
how from tyranny they were set free
Centuries pass and stories melt away to myth
and soon the children learn other fables
of a quiet and countrified lifestyle on a farm
of captains chairs and tables
But for me the salty marshes adorned with white gulls
the briny air and noisy tides
there are old memories envisioned at night
are not dreams where memory hides ?
And I have returned there many times to the sea
and to relive these childhood stories
of the fisherman and my grandmothers home
of the fishing piers and the painted dories
One day perhaps my ashes too
may adorn the place of rocky piers and sea foam
either on shore line there
or along these fields of home
