Today is Another Father’s Day
Today is Another Father’s Day
1.)
In a slide glance I saw your
sister, alongside sister,
almost hidden by brother,
my seven year old.
This trade-off too quickly done,
though your brother waved goodbye,
heard your sister’s voice from back
cover your soft words.
I fear you drove off before
the chance to properly hug
each one of you equally,
oh, my little boy.
These little things mean so much
to sensitive seven year old
a missed touch or a missed hug
lingers in lifetimes.
These connections to our young
a responsibility
we must always consider
seriously.
Even accidents can leave
an impression deep within the clay
the mold of a human being
built from parents bond.
2.)
As you drive away my son
I stand alone on sidewalk
to think upon your gentle
spirit and your soul.
You within this angry world
leaves residue of sadness
a desire to lift you out
before silt settles.
Once again the sun rising
through window near my corner
where I write and you will sleep
write my living dreams.
Unlike your older siblings
you sneak out in pajamas
to rub the sleep from your eyes
put the notebook down.
You curl up for awhile
till my domestic day starts
prepare everyone’s breakfast
water the garden.
While I start my daily work
you watch Saturday cartoons
enjoy bowl of cereal
comfortable times.
3.)
Today another Father’s
Day without my children
not what this day is about,
celebrate presence.
Try to remember boyhood
search for hole in my childhood
search for gifts I can give
to all three of you.
So this is symbolic time
tomorrow when your sister
runs in looking for fun
the teen to his room.
The seven your old will sit
share stories of the last week
prove that connections remain,
tightly grip my hand.
This is Father’s Day I know
all three of you in your place
where I could stand in middle
ready for your call.
An equal footing for all
differentiate by need
heart in many directions
spirit only one.

“It’s only when you grow up and step back from him — or leave him for your own home — it’s only then that you can measure his greatness and fully appreciate it.”
– Margaret Truman
Wonderful poetry coming straight from a loving father’s heart.
