The Awakening of Earth – A Poem of Springtime

Such joy found in the awakening of earth
The blanket of white, now mostly forgotten
Remnants of dirty-grey shadow piles remain
Their days are numbered, so says the glowing sun
Thawing ground releasing blades of grass
Yawning, stretching, and reaching skyward
Below their roots awakening to the news
Life is free to return, the soil can breathe
A trained ear can hear the landscape speaking
Rivers make their voices heard first
The cackling of cracking ice slipping downstream
Bubbly laughter slipping past waiting stones
Everything all at once as the moment arrives
Along the branches of bare trees, whispers gather
Tiny buds holding the promise, yet still bound
Maybe tomorrow, the unfurling of waiting leaves
The heavy masked silence of winter’s weight gone
Birdsong, sweet melodies, returning to the morning
A single call, then another, and then a symphony
Movement where only months ago held stillness
Wriggling, crawling, the air now buzzing
Insects drawn to the surface by the warming sun
Wind moves softer now, no longer the harbinger
But an envoy carrying the scent of damp earth
And the faint sweetness of blossoms in bloom
Across hills and meadows, the palette of springtime
Vibrant shades of green, pink, yellow, and purple
Colors that speak of life, renewal, and joy
Spreading slowly but with purpose
Burying the last remaining bones of winter
Clarity reigns in the charm of the fields
Rich black soil turned to meet the sun
While further along, beyond the planting lands
Petal by patient petal whispers lines of poetry
Pollinators pulled closer by their magic
Life once again speaks of providing and prosperity
Spring writes its quiet message across the waking world
Deep in understanding, nothing else seems to matter

I write about everything and sometimes nothing at all. I'm fascinated by old things, rusty things, abandoned places, or anywhere that a secret might be unearthed. I'm passionate about history and many of my pieces are anchored in one concept of time or another. I've always been a writer, dating back to my youth, but the last decade has been a time of growth for me. I'm continually pushing the limitations of vocabulary, syntax, and descriptive phrasing.
