The 5 Ages of the Universe

There is a book called ‘The 5 Ages of the Universe”
Here is my poetic take on it.

The 5 Ages of the Universe

by: Elizabeth Mathews

We thought long and hard

About the birth of the universe

And with a flash, a Bang

A clattering of trumpets

And pots and pans

Chattering, giggles

The door was opened

To the bright light from the emptiness

The Primordial soup

Decided which ways to drip

Which glasses to fill

How to order the plates at the table

And with song and number

Void and appetite

She spooned herself out, feeding the space

Her voice cajoled the Age of Stars

The Stelliferous

Whose breath exhaled the spores of life

To seed and branch the membranes of time

Filling the halls with glowing movement

The infinite value of things realized

The magnificent host to time

And time, outlived us all

To the age of Degenerate matter

The fading whisper, the empty seats

Silently creeping across the cloth

To tuck in her children forever

In her graveyard, in her evening

In her late hour, in her winding down

We thought long and hard

About how death looks like sleep from far away

And how long extinction lasts

Under the fading fabric of our table

The last shadows whine and scurry

The glowing eyes of ghosts linger

Bringing in the Age of Black Holes

The last bastions of form in space

These grand sinks, like kitchen drains

Will too, one day, evaporate

Falling into themselves

And our memories of her will be shredded

Like the threads that once bound the edges of her skirt

Then, whatever you can imagine of the Dark

Whatever deep dream you can summon

As a solute for the infinite

Can only make the dissolution more

Unfathomable

The Dark door beneath the floorboards

Will creak and give way

To unknowable dust

Where every particle decays and the source

of everything

Completes its cycle through entropy

All things joined back as one in a cold soup

Left to sit on the stove

In the ageless beyond

At the End of the universe

Everything is soup.
