“Peace, Love, and Labrador Retrievers”

A Continual Saga of a “Younger-than-Now” Poet from the Highly Esteemed State of Texas proclaiming more Poetic-able Prose using just pure wit!

“You were Born to Run…All Day in the Sun…And to be Free to go Play…”

Words come at you everyday; Poems are just a little more organized in what they have to say!

Poems: Get a bad rap…usually considered flowery, soft, artsy, etc. Maybe…some of that is true. But…put in the right context…Poems can get a point across with underlying stealth and quiet intelligence. Perhaps…even better than the average writings we see daily. This is Mr. Manly Poetry Man’s Quest. To Boldly Go Where No Poetry Man Has Gone Before and… Boldy Write Some New Poems…? Sometimes Poems need to have their energy harnessed and then put on display. With that I bring you:

“Peace, Love, And Labrador Retrievers”

I said, “A Country Boy at heart…I will always be,
Stuck here in the day-to-day cycle of a Gulf Coast Big Ci-ty‘.
You can say, “You’re Juz’ a City Boy”…until your face turns blue,
But soon…I’ll be putting a cabin in right next to some Country Boy…Like you!

“Having my feet in the City…Mind on the Country…is not all that new for me,
You’ve got plenty of room for us…”City Dwellers”…out here in the Coun-try’.
I’ll be moving there in a little while…Ready to make my stake on the Promised Land.
For now…I’m just doing the “Working” thing…trying to make a living the best I can.”

Thinking it won’t be long now; Time has come for me to widen my spread.
All this talk of the Country has gone and went…straight to my head.
Thoughts take me out to where my dogs can all roam and be free,
Along with my soul…and my wife’s… together me and my “Hon-ey’ “.

To view each New Day…while looking over the top of my Coffee Cup,
Enjoying the quiet woods around…taking shape as the sun comes up.
And listen to my Dogs…out running all around.
Barking to awake the morning…Patrolling every inch of Ground.

Knowing that my Destiny lies Waiting,
Thinking of that Future Morning…and Anticipating,
I look down at the Labrador sitting next to me now…
And tell him, “It won’t be too much longer…Anyhow!”

He smiles that Doggy kind of grin…
His thoughts…like mine…have also been…
To meadow fields with birds ready to take to flight…
To water banks where crickets and frogs chirp all through the night.

“Oh…City Dog…Yes…I know,” I look down to him and say,
“You were Born to Run…All Day in the Sun… And to be Free to go Play,
And look at us…at Home behind these Walls…Not fair…our Yard’s too small,
Don’t worry, my friend…Country life beckons us…and “Yes”…I too, hear it call!”

A Dog either knows exactly what you say…or perhaps could really care less…
Deep down their Natural Instincts prevail…they understand perhaps more than the rest.
This Labrador…is ready to take on the world away from here…Look at him wag his tail.
What concern of human things does he have…To afford to go…or If the dream could fail?

So… I think I’ll work a little Harder…a little Longer…and Dream a little more…
And let my Lab… go back to sleep…”Cooped-up” on the laundry room’s floor.
No need to get all worked up…Must make a good living in the Big City…For us: “Big Believers”,
Time to get back to it for another day…It will happen soon…”Peace, Love, and Labrador Retrievers”.

“He smiles that Doggy kind of grin…”
