Please Don’t Take That Final Ride
The demon whispers in your ear
Builds you up, and swerves your fear
Everything will be alright
New Year’s Eve, it comes tonight
Such a night for celebration
While liquor flows across the nation
It’s the grandest night of drinking fun
You can’t be stopped; you are the one
The early gig, it’s where you start
Jump on it, just play your part
Everyone waiting, don’t try to hide
Open the door and burst inside
The bar is open, the crowd is jumping
Music playing, the beat is thumping
An endless tap, and shots are flowing
Whiskey gets your party going
Countless drinks, but don’t you worry
Catching up, you’d better hurry
You’re good to go, don’t think it slow
You got this down, just let it go
High some fives, and hands to shake
Another party, that you have to make
There’s your car, you’re feeling fine
Next stop beyond the county line
Play some music, crank it loud
Windows down, feeling proud
Use your knees to steer while you crack a beer
You haven’t had much fun this year
The friendly buzz is talking hold
Worry not, you’re in control
Second party, you come rolling in
A martini bar and flowing gin
Classy crowd, they greet you well
Make the rounds, then say farewell
It’s still early, but you want to hurry
Clouds rolling in and your eyes are blurry
Several miles, then you see the lake
Make the turn, slam the brakes
Slip on in and smell the weed
Take a hit, it’s what you need
Here the booze is really flowing
Room to room, your drink is showing
Stumble, stumble, but never fall
Steady there, just hold the wall
Head is floating, big old smile
Time to take that final mile
Party four, it’s where you’ll stay
Ringing in the New Year’s Day
It’s up the street, an easy trip
Pedal down, and there you zip
Welcome crowd is really loud
You’re pretty buzzed, nah, you’re plowed
The wine is flowing, glasses clinking
Always happy when you’re drinking
Soon it comes the midnight hour
Kisses, hugs, Champaign shower
A few more shots, then out the door
But can’t find what you’re looking for
Where did you park, where’s the car
Looking close, then searching far
Slip and fall, then laugh out loud
While overhead a thundercloud
Drunken you, regains composure
Time to jet, the night is over
You find the car, then slide inside
Keys in hand, you stare squint-eyed
Rain starts falling, the windows wet
Something looms, you start to sweat
A little voice, it screams inside
Please, don’t take that final ride
The demon shouts, ignore that voice
A highway awaits, let’s both rejoice
Think of it, the fun awaits
The sharpened turns, and endless straights
You can pound the gas, weave, and pass
Burnouts on the neighbor’s grass
It’s not too late, for a late night drink
Or find a date, lucky you, wink, wink
But the voice of reason takes the stage
Shouting down the demon’s rage
Don’t push your luck, no shape to drive
If you try, you won’t survive
The final ride you can’t do over
Sleep it off, then drive home sober
Author’s Note
New Year’s Eve is one of the most dangerous night’s to drive, especially if you are drunk or under the influence. Please call a cab, ask a sober friend to drive you home, or stay the night. Don’t listen to the demon whispering in your ear – your life is worth so much more. Please don’t take the final ride.
Blessings
