The Fine Art of Haiku

a

Like expensive wine

good Haiku is difficult

second class is fine

Though things seem broken

like a rock thrown at ripples

or a still reflection

Or in parching heat

when our hearts are in union

or separation

Light finds an escape

into the darkest of night

by window near brook

Save the final stop

for after the first seven

to end the first line

Our voice in a dream

only the dreamer can see

structure of our thoughts

b

Drag each foot onward

into far peaks of a cloud

we are together

To find a Yara

try to build uncertainty

to live in wonder

We write long poems

with no pleasure in the write

general design

To learn this one skill

pure objective word painting

lift sail and travel

Speak of life itself

never sit refusing life

for longer than dream

Children throw small stones

without thought of a return

simple reaction

c

Plan to steal island

to hide away from the wind

and Cicada cry

These learned metaphors

delicacies of color

unlearned emotions

Command me to sing

my heart melts with a deep pride

all that is harsh melts

Must be a moon rise

behind various wild grass

a cricket is heard

Traveller will hum

while rowing upon rivers

youth’s bitter passion

Silent amazement

as kindling turns to our light

moment indulgence

d

Talk of summer rain

dry forest trees need water

reciting prayer

May the poet write

circumstances of our lives

function from a farm

Love is flower’s bloom

as said in most Hallmark cards

grace to endless toil

Shadow of an Elm

dances away from each step

the scent of Lilac

Heavy July rain

flowers float on rivers

mysterious songs

Soon summer will end

bees minister this message

now is time to sit
