Week at Musangsa Temple

A

Shadow of a deer

from mountain temple above

we walk with the setting sun

water ripples down

a path created by hoe

tail of some marshland Muskrat

Listen quietly

songs from bird from otherworld

time to marry butterfly

dream of secret moon

sit until proper words come

monks are the guests and the hosts

A lopsided bird

hospitality of monk

to leave bird seed and water

as this Swallow leans

from one leg to the other

some time to properly heal

Though a morning haze

temples painted as a dream

many monks go their own way

a pleasant school hall

here winter snow is falling

our journey is in Autumn

Here upon this road

born again as hilltop pine

where everybody blossoms

like white cherry blooms

deep study of open soul

or simple play with Sparrow

Even insects cry

sometimes after a long rain

brilliant reflection of shrine

monotonous bell

drones out the monastery

slow activity begins

B

Haiku composes

sees length of lives in temples

a proverb in common speech

on poetic mountains

here is the wide worlds real way

once left unwatched for three days

A monks mountain home

washing bowl to washing bowl

gather in waves of color

evening prayer

each tear drop of morning dew

mornings tender compassion

Soon Spring will melt snow

possibilities pleasure

life starts in intricately painted huts

life in peaceful hands

a blown letter someone threw

away fallen by temple

Village festival

where the monks gather to dance

circles smaller and smaller

never seem to tire

sadly saunter single file

walk back to their quiet home

On the seventh day

when the Weaver’s Star lights sky

the herdsmen call in the herd

on the seventh month

celebration of earth born

begins with wave of willow

A tranquil sermon

a silent meditation

before an afternoon nap

near a mountain stream

to dream of Great Buddha’s nose

noon snooze in thicket shadow
