I Thought I Knew Why

I thought I knew why.
the sky was blue,
clouds took on different shapes and sizes
and the leaves and grass were green.
Always rushing toward the sea,
rivers flow so fast,
lakes gleam in the sun,
and oceans and seas lap to shore.
I thought I knew it all
and so much more.
Then they tell me –
the rain from the sky,
has chemicals in it.
The water of the rivers, lakes, oceans, and seas,
are polluted and don’t swim here, please.
I thought I knew why,
salmon swim upstream –
now they tell me salmon may soon be only a dream.
Always with great joy,
birds flew up so high.
But now they meet with pollution,
that fills the skies.
Migratory birds,
left in winter and returned in summer.
Now some oil tanker
has run aground
and the birds are dying from the spill.
I thought I knew why,
wild animals lived in forests and jungles
and majestic animals roamed the plains in Africa.
Now species are becoming extinct,
some humans or companies,
have destroyed their natural habitats.
Poachers like madmen,
are killing the animals in Africa.
Children enjoy life,
children love this world of ours.
they run and play,
but now there won’t be much left to treasure.
Terrorists are destroying,
most everything
and adults and children are dying.
So here I sit and protest,
writing petitions to the politicians that be.
Perhaps if we join together
and do our part –
we can help set this world to rights –
then I will once again know why,
Will you?

It is sad what is happening to Earth and wild life. We must find a way to heal and protect Mother Earth and all life. Well done on this poem, Rasma. Have a good week.
Thank you, Phyllis and yes, we must do our part, I also hope you have a good week.
The world is in quite a sad state both environmentally, and socially. Your poem describes it well. Thanks for sharing, Rasma.
You’re welcome, John. These things are always on my mind.
Sorry I didn’t sign in before Lol. Nice piece Rasma. We are in a sad state of affairs when it comes to mother earth, socially and environmentally. I can’t help but think the government is involved somehow in polluting the skies, the waters, and our brains. But that is a rabbit hole I will not go down today. Nice work.
Thank you, Paul. Sad indeed and I hope there might be institutions that can lend a helping hand,
Important work Rasma. S o much needs to happen to save what we know. Jamie
