Bird Path of Swann Lake
Bird Path of Swann Lake
1.)
Followed these birds path
the Heron and the Magpie
multiple families of Duck
built strong foundation
to slowly raise their Ducklings
or to hunt or play in reed.
A Snowy Egret
not common at this climate
seems to have found a new home
sturdy place to live
for a bird so out of place
jumping from grass patch to stone.
Carry book to path
copy of Wendell Berry
his “Sabbath’s” and his Sunday
walks in local wild
after weeks of grueling labor
to feed and work on his farm.
Realize the work
never ends among the reed
rest around newly found pond
light against the day
as if the daylight destroys
everything created here.
2.
Sandpiper skitters
moves quick on thin twig like legs
up ahead man walks his dog
a few fly away
a family of Ducks remain
a Mallard seems lost in mate.
Criss-cross applesauce
will read to diversity
of multicolored bird life
a Berry “Sabbath”
an ode to a quiet way
six days of work one to play.
Maybe Mallard’s seen
many deaths before his mate
she is not foreign to pain
creation begins
with flow of mountain water
their young behind their mother.
Hands in pockets
to stay warm in morning frost
blow circles of mist in air
witness miracles
creation of new system
I am silent bystander.
3.
Talk to each other
about new families of Quail
navigating across path
the grace of daylight
presence of greater power
among strange mixture of bird.
These rivers must drink
to draw a watery home
slowly draining to the fields
Heron stands above
last years completed stanzas
water moving slow through time.
Days heat progresses
river runs slowly these days
put seed out on my front porch
with my succulents
desire to play a part
tired silent observer.
Walk everyday
everyday the land changes
as birds move around Swann Lake
new places new homes
to settle and raise their young
the light of Spring here again.

I feel as though I just spent a lovely early morning around the lake, watching the birds and enjoying nature just by reading your poem. Well done, Jamie. I love it.
Thank you Phyllis. It is a pleasure to take my morning walk with you. Jamie
