The Best of You…

Written in Villanelle form. I chose to use the song titles from the Foo Fighters to write this. The featured image is actually a concert I went to.

The Best of You…

I.

Bridges Burning, I let them Burn Away

Everlong the Dirty Water flows

Up In Arms, The Line towed, goes this way

Sunday Rain, On the Mend, making way,

Outside my home, the world pivots slow,

Bridges Burning, I let them Burn Away

Next Year, I will Make It Right and pray,

In the Clear today, the trumpet’s blow

Up In Arms, The Line towed, goes this way

She loves how were Making a Fire sway,

Resolve to Run, to Summer’s End we go,

Bridges Burning, I let them Burn Away

T-Shirt caked with blood and sweat These Days

All My Life been Chasing Birds I know,

Up In Arms, The Line towed, goes this way

Cloud-spotter one day, next I’m D.O.A.

Concrete and Gold and tombstones enclosed

Bridges Burning, I let them Burn Away

Up In Arms, The Line towed, goes this way.

II.

Dear Rosemary, I hope there’s Enough Space,

Life is all Floaty, I Should Have Known,

Love Dies Young, with heartfelt letters and dates

I pray to Saint Cecilia for grace,

Wind Up erasing her air from my phone

Dear Rosemary, I hope there’s Enough Space

Ain’t It the Life, bags packed just in case,

A Cold Day in the Sun, to be alone

Love Dies Young, with heartfelt letters and dates

Waiting On A War, my steps retraced

Wheels in motion, no need to postpone,

Dear Rosemary, I hope there’s Enough Space

Papers filed, and I’m The One replaced,

Rope left long enough to hang my throne,

Love Dies Young, with heartfelt letters and dates

Medicine at Midnight, and I’m shit-faced,

This Live-In Skin boils as it cries and moans,

Dear Rosemary, I hope there’s Enough Space,

Love Dies Young, with heartfelt letters and dates

the best of you

III.

Perhaps I’ll Learn to Fly, just not today

This Long Road to Ruin was made with pain

Do I Miss the Misery, no way!

My Hero was the court papers displayed,

My Home is free from her lasting stain,

Perhaps I’ll Learn to Fly, just not today.

I’ll Come Back, to therapy this Friday

I needed to Let It Die, sad and plain

Do I Miss the Misery, no way!!

Some Bridges Burning must hit the bricks laid

To Break-out of this funk, I shut my brain,

Perhaps I’ll Learn to Fly, just not today

La Dee Dah I sing as life goes astray,

High and Low emotions go to complain,

Do I Miss the Misery, no way!

Was that your Best of You type who betrayed?

The Pretender who broke my heart in vain,

Perhaps I’ll Learn to Fly, just not today

Do I Miss the Misery, NO WAY!!!

Great work, Paul. It takes a lot of skill to create a poem using all those song titles. I always enjoy reading your work. Well done.

A Villanelle! I appreciate what you have done here and think it is cool that you are breaking away from Haiku and trying your hand at a French form especially with Foo Fighter Lyrics. I love it. A bonus is learning the differences in the forms and how they operate. What you are doing is a perfect way to do this. Jamie
