Introduction to Poem:

A Narrative Poem Salute to our U.S. Armed Forces Veterans…long after Veteran’s Day. Inspired by November 11th and their Service to us. Our Veterans are truly special. Where would we be without them? Maybe…just for one moment…or a day…say each: “Veteran’s Day”. We should all put ourselves in their shoes for a couple of seconds…just to try and understand what all they have really been through for us. The title to this “One” came up in my brain when I went to a Major League Baseball game in 2005 (a year when my team did really well!). Where they had offered up free seats to the Marine Reserve Unit that had just returned from Iraq. We had actually seen this Marine Unit load the Bus…the Day they would depart for War. That makes a big impact on a person, looking into the faces of “Ones” that are going off to War.

So, as I looked around the Baseball Stadium, at all the young and slightly older Marines that were safely back at home again. Something seemed wrong…Something seemed out of place. It took a few innings for me to figure out what was the problem. We should have all been in the stands cheering the Marines on…including the Baseball team…while they took a bow and told us of what they had been able to do “out in the field”.

This Poem goes out to the “Ones” that fight for us…and have fought for us. It is slightly geared towards Marines…after all…they are the first of the first into the fray. But this is meant to “Honor” all that serve.

If Anyone Should be “Famous”…

If Anyone Should be "Famous"Sometimes you sit down in a place…and something just ain’t right…

Some People prayed for each One who served…Well, into the night.

Some People have come a long way…and have gone through a lot.

Some People wouldn’t be here now…unless they fought and fought.

Some People…you just can’t “Thank” enough…

Some People sitting next to you…been through some terrible stuff.

When you are sitting down to watch a Major League Ball Game…

And they play to “Honor” our Service Men and Women…as though everything is still the same.

After they just came from “Hell on Earth”…and saw terrible anguish…and terrible pain…

Yet they are glad to be back with those that loved and prayed for them…again…

As they “Humbly” keep to themselves…what they’ve been through…in refrain…

Let me take a minute…as a Plain ‘Ol Civilian to brag on our “Veterans” and explain.

How many times have we watched the “War”…safely on the Nightly News…

How many times have we listened to everyone else’s … (but the “One’s” serving) different views?

You see them donning an old uniform…wearing a dark pair of shades…

You see them…waving back at you over the years…at many Parades.

Better believe that Uniform they wear stands for something that cannot be simply stated…

I’m going to try to “Honor” their Service to us…and get it right…and try not to complicate it.

On Veteran’s Day…We “Honor” those in the Parade that made it back…as we shake their hands and wave…

We see the Ones waving back to us…but do we recognize all the Ones…lying in a grave?

All Gave Some…Some Gave All…Some gave up their tomorrows…for our today…right now…

Some stood their ground…and gave their All…what good are words to describe this anyhow?

Consider for a second…if it was you out on the Battlefield…

Maybe alone on a Mission…or hurt and stranded…Do you give up…Do you yield?

No… the “Fighting Spirit” of our American Forces…Will always keep them in the fight…

Don’t worry…back Stateside…They are fighting…It is safe to lie your head down each night.

In these Times…It’s not like a normal citizen…Stateside…has to suit-up…and go fight a War somewhere…

Our Military has that Department taken care of…They can deploy when needed…by Land, Sea, and Air.

Am I stating over and above…of too much exaggerated hype…of things you already know?

Or could it be…the Veteran sitting next to you in a ballgame…is a “True American” Hero.

Imagine if One Lone Marine…has One Lone Bullet left…what do you think that Marine is going to do?

The Fighting is never over…if One Marine still holds his ground; You can surely believe me…this is true.

Can you sense the “Fighting Spirit” in what I just said…?

One Marine will continue on a Mission…even if it means…that they’ll end up dead.

Of all that you have done while deployed…I wonder how much the Public really knows…

Though…I sit here…and also truly wonder…do they care for America’s “True Heroes”?

Don’t get me wrong…It is not like we should celebrate going to War…at all…

It is just that the determination and bravery of our Young Ones…leaves me proud they answer the call!

They fought for our Country…whether Chosin Reservoir or Khe Sahn…

They proudly represent our “Fighting Force” and stand in high “Honor” for all they’ve done.

It may have been in World War II…in Guadalcanal or Iwo Jim-a…

Or in Operation Iraqi Freedom… in al Anbar, Ramadi or Falluj-ah.

One thing is…that you can notice…down through History…

Notice how each Battle they fought…had an impact on you and me.

Because for sure…where would we be without their Service to us…when they went into Harm’s Way…

They have gone to fight…right into the Gates of Hell…so we could be standing here today.

Perhaps, we shouldn’t call it a “Forgotten War” (Korean War) …or a War we didn’t win (Viet Nam) …

When you know…we never want to send our Service Men and Women…over there again!

Humbly, give them all the respect they deserve for serving our Country proudly…

Next time you wave out to them in a Parade…Make sure to “Thank” them loudly.

Because they went over to fight for our Country…and you didn’t have to…

For one reason or another…they neutralized a threat…Sometimes that’s all we can do.

They were sent by our Officials…they acted on behalf of our Nation…

Don’t look to them to explain why they deployed…Our Leaders need to give the explanation.

Think of what it takes to fight constant battles…and to serve our Country…in the Military.

Those that serve…follow in the same tradition…of those who originally…gave us “Liberty”.

You know…many Volunteered or answered the call…many of them responded to a draft registration…

Some of them joined so quick…when we needed them…they overran the Recruiting station. (World War II and Post-9/11)

What can you say about people who go to put their life on the line…and sign-up for whatever action…our aim is…

Next time you see them in the stands cheering their team on…Just remember…they are the ones that should be “famous”.

If Anyone Should be "Famous"

The End.

A powerful and important poem, Steve. You said it on behalf of us all. This was a great poem in honour of the brave men and women who have given their all in the service of their country…in whichever war.
