For Once, Can’t We All Agree

For once, just once, I’d like to see
A coming together, when we all agree
No skeptics, spies, or trouble makers
Don’t stir the pot or invite the haters
Put politics aside, don’t be a cynic
Forget the tricks, don’t try a gimmick
Choose your faith, but don’t force me
I’ll become what I want to be
Bring an open mind and an open heart
To the public forum that’s not a court
It’s a call for peace, both far and near
To every nation around this sphere
Lay down your arms, and use your voice
Find compromise, and we’ll all rejoice
Too much damage, and the wasted lives
The boot, the sword, and sharpened knives
Oppressive tyrants, their untold greed
Planting hate, instead of seeds
Seizing armies, lives, and land
Greedily fighting to take command
The desire for power, an unchecked lust
Perverting facts, destroying trust
The gains are slim, on a razor’s edge
As human lives slip off the ledge
They’ll gladly send your men to slaughter
When they’re gone, they’ll send your daughters
Events played out on a video screen
The body counts beyond obscene
Human lives reduced to numbers
Stacked like wood outside the bunkers
Relentless attacks, so many lost
Charge the lines, ignore the cost
That’s why I say, we all agree
These conflicts don’t concern you or me
Why not let the leaders fight
Face to face, without a flight
Enter the ring and settle the score
One on one for evermore
The world with watch with admiration
Only one will die, but save the nation
With the rules now changed
No more shots exchanged
And the leaders life
Now against the knife
I’d bet my life, this new reform
Negotiating would become the norm
There’s common ground in every case
A chance for peace, a chance for grace

I write about everything and sometimes nothing at all. I'm fascinated by old things, rusty things, abandoned places, or anywhere that a secret might be unearthed. I'm passionate about history and many of my pieces are anchored in one concept of time or another. I've always been a writer, dating back to my youth, but the last decade has been a time of growth for me. I'm continually pushing the limitations of vocabulary, syntax, and descriptive phrasing.

Ralph, your line “Bring an open mind and an open heart” says it all. Peace would surely reign if more people could practice that which would be a kindness to themselves and others. Your poem holds a powerful message.
