Carnival Queen (Mardi Gras 1992)

I.

Again time possesses her on this stage

to when all verse flowed with her beauty once

upon her curves where ancient Satyr hunts

historic beauty creates Golden Age.

Why we the offenders appear soul vexed

when in school she stole each Professor’s eye

a fragile complicated butterfly

from pages of the holiest of lost text

a question heard out loud “Why her not me?”

woman wonder “Why not?  She is Woman!”

This star, this star has become hot embers.

To look upon her as Persephone

a perfect mix of Goddess and human

a demeanor that a soul remembers.

II.

My writing now is colder than this theme

when describing her beauty as a jewel

in contrast my lifestyle could look quite cruel

within heavenly light sits my small scheme.

To sing her Queen Libyan Ancestry

a royalty that is both feared and loved

a continent of her spirit is moved

the glory of her royal grand entry.

A father that proclaims daughter through tears

to share a majestic type nobleness

when she awakens and knows her dreams past.

She holds my heart with eyes musical spheres

oceans of pupil sea of tenderness

as we embrace against the wind steadfast.

III.

Whose honesty  has endured all weather

she is the star who kneels to kiss valley

as float makes turn to thievery alley

her beauty brings the masses together.

She has changed all the focus of my love

she returned speech to my silent dumbness

and returned feeling to a harsh numbness

when waving to the crowd with sequin gloves.

She returned loves language back to my eyes

a passion of wonder with her quick glance

she is the joy of my morning sorrow.

The pain of sadness through my senses rise

as her whole Krewe begins to twirl and dance

her praise into the dawn of tomorrow.
