Halloween Tanka
Halloween Tanka
1.
Chill October wind
carries longer nights darkness
tree leaves turn color
with leftover green.
Underneath Fall tree
where leaves turn red and orange
pumpkins manifest
Witches and Goblins.
Super-Hero Cape
Pirates of the Seven Seas
coming out tonight
on this chilly breeze.
Under a Fall moon
scary masks Helter-Skelter
hiding in cellar
or abandoned shack.
A sack of candies
sweets from the smile of a Witch
at home there is pie
from Autumn apple.
A magic mirror
to turn children to Goblins
in front of our eyes
surprise lends a scare.
2.
Gates are moved aside
hear creaks from opening doors
and loud ‘Trick-or-Treat’
around Werewolves fangs.
‘Mischief on moonbeams’
chanted spells with some bad deeds
black cat oracle
ghosts from long ago.
Elves in the kitchen
several Vampires in the hall
if you close your eyes
maybe prank with pass.
Be a child again
to run from shadows between
Giant Spider’s web
a boiling cauldron.
Gloomy organ sounds
each octave a ghostly tune
from neighbor’s rafters
such melancholy.
Bats in the Belfry
silently waiting for their flight
upon midnight air
reinforce our fear.
3.
This is the season
things die somethings reappear
nearby a zombie
moans a ‘brain’ mantra.
Every year our fate
chooses harvest or pestilence
harvested corn maze
empty wheelbarrow.
Near some graves the worms
wake silent ghosts with whispers
deprived of their flesh
quietly they hunt.
Coming for you child
these night crawlers and creepers
shadows form Mummies
Pharaoh long deceased.
Oh, chill October
to bring us Hallow’s Eve
such fantastic frights
on this Autumn night.
A part of childhood
to Trick-or-Treat once again
not ready for scare
hopeful for candy.

Great stuff here Jamie! I would not want to live in a time without Octobers…
