A Broken Crockpot

A Broken Crockpot
I
The Cat is the Criminal
The cat is the criminal
who will run away from crime
to stare as bystander
hide all signs of guilt.
Broken ceramic snapshots
breakproof houseware demise
due to excessive frolic
these sneaky cat ways.
Painted when manufactured
black around brown ceramic
broken and left in a pile
these poor left overs.
Remember the slow cooked meals
pot roasts and mashed potatoes
a stewed vegetable gravy
first memorable meal.
A slow cooked chicken
whose essence is used for broth
steams while simmers in my mind
joy of cooking slow.
Many years and many meals
sit simmering silently
onion and garlic odors
fill nooks of my home.
II
Crockpots and Relationships
A batch of green lentil soup
a spicy three bean chili
a memorable lasagna
so many dinners.
I think upon my sly cat
his role in catastrophe
maybe a new beginning
will start when broken.
From safe place on the counter
the broken crockpot sits still
after surviving divorce
specific trauma.
Once crockpot was left behind
in a disheveled ruin
ten years of family life
now in piles of junk.
Silently tread through garbage
tried to save some nostalgia
contractor bags full of trash
still crockpot stood strong.
What seems strong can still shatter
even sturdy objects break
after years of thoughtless words
or careless actions.
III
Just Buy A New One
Crockpot you’re so parent full
slow cook daily through my youth
this broken pot relative
a long family line.
A sturdy kitchen fixture
provides meal through disaster
if not too shattered itself
years of good service.
So the cat is forgiven
pick up ceramic fragments
dispense in the public waste
disinfect counter.
Just drive to the store for new
crockpot removed from a box
regain composure in time
to cook meals again.
A way to share forgiveness
slow cook savory pork
taste of Worcestershire Sauce
on the BBQ.
Come have a meal with us here
in my home there is plenty
let’s share each meal with a smile
and crockpot prayer.

I love this Jamie. I have items that have been in the family since I was a child and been passed down. It is shattering (pardon the pun) if one is broken. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you John. Jamie
Hmmm … thinking of broken shards. I once broke a crockpot and made an abstract wall hanging from the broken ceramic pieces. Glad to know you forgave the playful cat. Well done, Jamie.
Thank you Phyllis your abstract art sounds interesting. Jamie
