The New Kittens

THE NEW KITTENS
I
The energy at home has reached a peak
there needs to be a cure to slow things down
before Father stumbles and busts his crown
an energy these children seem to seek.
With silent paws they creep upon a sill
carefully in the round of flowerpot
where soil has gathered in the same old spot
upon the carpet where the plants stand still.
Instinctually training constantly
desire for perfection in the hunt
sometimes the house plants make the sacrifice.
These new kittens help strengthen family
when outside world is being rather blunt
an order of some playfulness is nice.
II
Looks upon his fore paw to see if clean
and with the paw he’s chosen start to lick
with fashion and a body politic
a rough shod tongue to scrub his fur to gleen.
Whether on my sofa or on my knee
a quiet purr as they begin to nap
can change as quickly as a sudden snap
and pounce around the world with joyous glee.
For hundreds of years poets took their pens
to share their studies of their pet felines
or carve some heiroglyphic momento.
But today I just sit and feel the cleanse
their frisky agendas written outlines
as energy reaches a crescendo.
III
With a surprising dignity he walks
always a whisker first and then a claw
such verocity in his little paw
as if to disrespect our little talks.
Sometimes their presence seems above it all
their interest in the bird who sits outside
the need for thrill of hunt to0 satisified
at times they chuckle, they flatten, they crawl.
The cat went here and there as moon spins round
when shadows cover portions of our lives
these cats they gather to help out their friends.
To dance backwards and forwards round and round
not politicians or their perfect wives
furry companionship the kind that mends.
