A Narrative of Dirt

1.

Narrative of dirt

there is beauty in the green

of trees as they bloom in spring

mossy lush ground cover

bees as they fly from flower

to flower, red ladybug

Magic in the mulch

in composted organics

returning our waste to earth

feeding its beauty

returning to the cycle

a complicated decay

Story of mixture

the dissolution of the old

breaking down of what we use

these handfuls of dirt

particles of what we were

with hope in what to become

Mineral mixture

organic material

microbes found dead or alive

our air and water

dynamic and important

soil as limited resource.

2.

An engineer sees

firm foundation to build

a place for infrastructure

a land for tract home

or additional freeway

parking garage of folk song

A diplomat sees

a territorial line

where a nation’s property ends

where our wars begin

drawing a line with a stick

in a never still soil

A scientist sees

surface full of minerals

layers of organic things

experiencing

biology and physics

a product of weathering

many horizons

combine into soil profile

each profile tells a story

narrative of dirt

different soils different stories

change with the climate of time.

3.

A difference is due

to the climate and landscape

is this ancient or unused

what microbes will grow

upon the earth underfoot

so many species of man

Container gardens

require less soil use

just enough to make your own

Peet Moss from the cliffs

a little of this and that

depends on red wheelbarrow

Embedded earth

a universal mixture

to start my keyhole garden

small plot in city

with Zucchini for neighbors

all from the dirt of our work

Narrative of dirt

each profile tells a story

of trees as they bloom in spring

many horizons

bees as they fly from flower

on a never still soil.
