Farewell to Summer
Farewell to Summer …

The last days of summer,
are like a sad melody.
plaintiff and sweet,
reminding us that summer is a real treat.
It’s a sad time,
as the days become cooler
and they become shorter,
mystic evening shadows come sooner.
We know before long –
it will be farewell to summer.
It will soon be time,
for birds to take wing
and fly to southern lands –
leaving behind the hope for a new spring.
The early morning bird choruses,
become just a memory,
walks hand in hand in the morning dew,
were the joys we knew.
Soon autumn leaves will fall from the trees
and swirl about us in reds, browns, yellows and oranges.
The wind will be much cooler
and no matter what we wish it will be farewell to summer.
Walking along the seashore,
gulls cry high above,
the waves now swirl faster,
the sky turning silver,
as we stand, remembering golden sand.
Summer always seems so brief,
the lazy, hazy days just fly,
before we even know it,
summer has flown.
If only we had known,
that love is inspired by summer days,
by nights of glittering stars,
dancing beneath the golden moon.
As I walk along,
the last summer flowers nod,
valiantly still blooming –
till the autumn wind fades them away.
Roses still on the vine,
making us remember summer days so fine,
holding hands we go,
wishing it wasn’t so –
but the cold winds now blow.
Wishing that summer would stay,
it never works that way,
but as we face autumn,
somewhere in the world, a new spring begins.
The best we can do,
is take a dance or two,
among the swirling leaves,
while colors are all about
and look forward to dreaming about summer’s return –
before a blazing fireplace as snowflakes begin to fall….

It is hard to believe summer has once again been left behind to make room for autumn. Love your poem, Rasma.
Thank you, Phyllis
I love the line “and no matter what we wish it will be farewell to summer.” I am reading your poem with a warm cup of coffee and watching snow fall. September snow. Jamie
Thank you Jamie and I can hardly believe you have September snow I know while I lived in Latvia I experience a heavy snowfall once in October
For me I am glad summer is over and the cooler temps of autumn have finally come. Nicely penned Rasma
Thank you, Kurt. These are now my memories since in Florida much does not change.
