To Get Ready for the New School Year

To Get Ready for the New School Year
1.) The First Day of School
Little excited?
Ok…jumping off the walls
the first day of school!
Wearing your new shoes
a fresh wardrobe for the day
along with a smile.
Unopened crayons
box of pencils to sharpen
new pink erasers.
Backpacks with cool prints
of characters from cartoons
filled with blank paper.
Pencils to sharpen
little minds to awaken
let learning begin.
Summer is over
a new school journey begins
the joy of learning.
We wake every day
to brush teeth and pack our bags
day of beginnings.
These school rituals
seem lost but not forgotten
as the summer ends.

2.) On a Small Patch of Grass
Prepare for homework
long nights with hard math problems
to write sentences.
On a small grass patch
Fourth graders run and play tag
near sturdy ball wall.
A first grader walks
looking at the ground for bugs
to show to his class.
A teen holds pow-wow
with his closest compadres
they laugh before bell.
A teacher stands still
with a whistle in her lips
kids safety this job.
Excitement of math
playing with even numbers
and also the odd.
Find a book to read
nail biter of a story
during classroom break.
School days have returned
with laughs, with hugs, and high fives
the joys of learning.

3.) Begin by Learning
An establishment
to enable all of us
the power to move.
Civilization
taught in their social studies
where read on work sheets.
Tell me what you think
About a certain topic
in a paragraph.
At home to waken
young minds for feast of knowledge
eat a good breakfast.
Wear their uniforms
make sure homework is complete
walk them to the bus.
This routine of love
everyday of the school year
will stay forever.
Along with reports
on reading “Treasure Island”
to never forget.
Begin by learning
from first day till next summer
a gift to cherish.

How well I remember getting my kids ready for the new school year. It was an exciting time for us. Even further back in time, I remember when my parents had to get all seven of us kids prepared for school. You brought back some wonderful memories, Jamie, and did it so well with excellent Haiku. I enjoyed this piece so much. Well done.
And all we wanted to do was grow up when we didn’t realise how good we had it back then. The complexities and pressures of life yet to be realised, those halcyon days of school and childhood so vividly remembered and painted so well, Jamie. It brings back even the smells of lunch boxes and smelly sock, games and afternoons never to be forgotten. Great work, memories like it was yesterday. Take care my friend.
