The Lingering of Pain

Truly Letting Go
It is easy to understand that pain and past circumstances have a negative effect on our present and that forgiveness is necessary. That is the only way we can let go and move on. But often, when circumstances are life-changing and their effects so deeply felt, it is possible to forgive but difficult to forget.
The Lingering of Pain
Thoughts of yesterday’s pain
still linger like toxic rain,
pervasive as they are
they hover like flocks of ravens,
circling the heavens in ominous breach
of skies in peaceful eternity,
rather their presents a weighted brow,
a reminding vow of uncertainty
as time whittles away my moments,
and I, in dour hands,
cannot break free.
Winds evoke a wanted change
yet prescribe the same,
as clouds amass on a disparaging horizon,
dulled of gloaming glory
and fallen to grey depths
amid an endless sea of discontent,
for the sting of cast hurt remains,
love soured by an insane mind,
as self-betrayal and identity is lost
to the shadow side,
and I must accept this reality.
Forgiveness has not untethered
the burden of loss,
but taken one step back,
a perspective somehow lost
in the emotional turmoil,
and now sad renderings haunt my dreams
of all the love and joy crushed by lies,
as if it were nothing,
and I a fool for believing
her love was real, her mind free from the seed
that rose in the shadows of sin.
My rationale has been left wanting,
my machinations a spurious neglect
of reality’s ugly face,
as I believed in potential
and forgiving for the ascension of betterment,
yet that smiling face was just a veil,
a silken lie of deep resentment
and I not aware, lost in love’s avail,
open and vulnerable, I,
for a straying mind to aspire
to a murderous resolve.

One can forgive in time, yet the pain is often unforgettable. Very well expressed poem, Tony, and so emotive. The pain lingers, for love was there and it was stomped on. Do take care dear friend.
Glad you appreciated the outpouring, Phyllis. Take carer.
I like this poem Tony I think you need to face the pain and the consequences of the pain. But to do this you need to not be afraid of the dark. Jamie
Thanks Jamie, my poetry is often not about me, although my experiences attest most of it. I write these pieces for others to relate to as I feel sharing our humanity in this way is cathartic. Cheers!
