Rest easy old boy
Rest easy old boy and worry not my love
I will remember you forever
the light in your eyes the warmth of your breath
they way you played so clever
Arriving down my dirt path hungry wet and lost
asking only love once more
I could see the spirit in the depth of your eyes
all of man’s history and lore
You spent your last years in this pasture dancing
prancing and grazing in grace
you knight you king you warrior
Oh how you owned this place
Remember me my love my adoration
remember me my gentle hands
remember too the paths we wandered
across these hilly lands
I will one day rest here beside you when we
are joined in the eternities again
and know deep in your heart of your life
you found one forever friend
So lay aside the darkness of hunger the memory
of the shouts and the whips evermore
and walk gently in the heavens
to the edges of loves gentle shore

Oh my gosh, Ed. I have tears pouring down – this poem is so lovely and heart-warming. There are many kinds of love and you just expressed a strong love and bond between a man and his horse. I know that love and it is beautiful. Well done, Ed, well done indeed.
Phyllis , Thank you , I have volunteered at horse boarders and was just reading about a draft horse rescue facility taking in older and abused horses , wish they were closer to me , I’d go there and work for nothing just to show them love , we do what we can , no ? ! ? !
It’s shameful what’s happening to animals in America !
Be well Phyllis !
This is such a sad and touching piece, Ed. I love animals and hate when any have to suffer or get old and pass away. All my animals have been strays or rescued in some way. Thank you for sharing.
John , Thank you sir , I am proud to know you do that , not surprised though as you seem the type …………….:-]
Living around horses I was drawn into your poem. Some true emotions there, thank you Ed. Jamie
Hi Jamie ,Thank you , You are the lucky one “……living around horses ……..” I have ridden much but never owned my own . My favorite ? Week long trail riding vacations in Montana !
