Who Owns Your Feelings?
Who decides how you feel today?
A simple question for some, while a complicated conundrum for most everyone else…
As you awake, can you feel the ache?
Physical pains deep within your veins
As we age, we wear the chains
Our bodies slowly wearing away
But despite the pain, we still can choose
Whether we smile or embrace the blues
It’s a state of being; a state of feeling
To some appealing, to others revealing
Is your mind clouded with yesterday’s news?
Perhaps remnants of other’s views
With all the random electronic noise
Blurry lines between girls and boys
Protests here and protests there
Climate change and dirty air
Yellow vests and the evil west
People scorned and people blessed
How much influence can we find?
Attacks and assaults upon our minds
But what makes you decide a feeling?
A reaction yes, but unappealing
Letting things pollute your ceiling
Stops your growth and limits healing
And on those days you claim insane
You’re just looking for the blame
Something, someone, or maybe neither
Go ahead, commence your fever
It’s like being well; fit and strong
So you stretch and grasp for all that’s wrong
Implementing the twisted lies
All the falsehoods, wrapped in lies
Because you find they make you feel
Turn your mind, just like a wheel
Spinning and spinning, but staying still
Might have well just popped a pill
So once again you need to think
Clear your mind and avoid the drink
Ask these queries and listen true
Carefully and through and through
Is anyone responsible for the life I live?
Am I a slave and forced to give?
Can I blame you for my errors?
Or all the worldly acts of terror?
Does casting blame cause any change?
Does it heal the aches and pains?
Blaming only makes you passive
Gets you ready for your casket
Ask yourself what your stone will say:
Lived life with a finger pointed
Refused the truth; died disappointed
Always chose to blame another
Assumed all feelings were ruled by others
Felt undeserving and deprived of joy
Always ignored his inner boy

Wow! Very thought provoking work, Ralph. Something we must remember: we have choices. We can choose to be ourselves, be all we can be – or, let others control our thoughts and feelings. Nice work on this very important message. Well done.
