When the Penny Drops

When the Penny Drops
When the Penny Drops

I wait impatiently for the penny to drop,
the blind tremors of my wondering,
accosted by what I’m seeing not,
and aghast I stand, confused with duality,
my assumptions torn
from the truth, now given in stark reality.

Then the beating begins, how can I be so stupid,
when truly I thought I was smart,
now it seems in the aftermath
I’m as dumb as a rake,
the stakes I had no closer to the truth, just fake,
and in flagellant state, the whip sets me straight.

How often, for all my insights,
I trip over a truth so obvious, as in wrong from right,
yet I oblivious to the plight;
I guess it grounds me,
subtly lets me know I’m not perfect,
and vigilant I must remain.

We are only as good as our last right,
so don’t get complacent,
learning is a constant state,
and the more we think in arrogance,
the worse those mistakes get,
as we may let our ego take full flight.

If only we could always be right,
see what’s coming, the plight more a knowing,
but in the end, if that were so,
we wouldn’t need to be here,
learning from all the mistakes we sew,
and copping it on the chin in recompense.

Perhaps we just don’t like being wrong,
blind or not knowing, symptoms of an ego,
which we all must have,
yet a swollen one not worth the stab,
that piercing knife that reminds us
we’re human, and not all that good at it, either.

I shall not rest on my laurels,
not expect to win with everything,
for that is an invitation,
a trip, an indication of fault,
that will no doubt cut me down a peg,
and in the end, I rather learn, wouldn’t you?

Most definitely I would rather learn than to sit back and miss opportunities to grow. I like this well penned, expressive piece, Tony. None of us are perfect or we would not be here in this university of life. Sometimes a truth is so well hidden that even one with the gift of sight, such as yourself, may miss it at first. Nice work dear poet. Take care.

    Hi Tony , We can do no more than bare our souls in words can we , why we do that in the beginning is one reason and in the end that reason and a thousand more . But write we do and we keep writing to ends that will fulfill something within as writers even if no one else appreciates but make no mistake ;
your writing is impressive and now from this day forward , your words here are eternal .
Keep up the great work .

    I seem in a dry spell , so what do I do , I wait and read………Ed

Tony , Nice writing , Why do we do this if not for a need in the beginning and a hundred needs perhaps in the end , make no mistake though , your writing is prolific and eternal . It is not only here right now but very well could be right here forever !
Keep up the great work !………Ed
