That Rear Vision Mirror

That Rear Vision Mirror
That Rear Vision Mirror

Forever in the rear mirror,
in eloquent whispering to remind,
the past draws our consciousness to reminisce,
to remember in kind the failures of past,
when lessons learned cast shadows
on future’s spin, the life we now follow.

It is in this wisdom of learned state
we appreciate the pain experienced,
the delirious sleepless nights we endure,
to come to terms with our impure thoughts
and the actions we so regret,
when in retrospect we reflect.

It is well we remember,
for that keeps us on a road worth exploring,
repetition just a boring and painful cycle,
where refusal to learn makes it all harder
to glean what we must garner
to keep us aware of past issues.

Scars too remind us,
the foolishness of a stubborn will
in refusal of truth, immersed in a swill of delusion
that keeps us broken when we truly know better,
fettered as we are to the lies we tell ourselves
and the wants we so desire.

So I keep past in that mirror,
just a reflection, a fading memory,
held to remind me of my mistakes,
those painful faux pas and miscalculations
that come at cost in recompense,
and in learning a sense of relief.

I try not to re-offend,
to let those memories lapse,
for the circumstances they create
can tax a soul greatly,
forsaking our very purpose in life,
our path blurred by wasteful labor.

Eyes always forward,
and let those echoes resound,
but keep focus on the now, where thoughts create a future,
not tethered to a wanting past,
instead anew to possibility, to clean beginnings
and the realization of dreams.

We are who we are because of our past,
it brought us here, made us who we are,
but holding onto the pain of learning
is like remembering the stomach ache
not the taste of an ice-cream,
so let dreams take over in a new world.
