Pursuing Empty Dreams

Each stepping stone to want is a distraction,
a temporary malaise quashed,
and they come and go,
never really giving us the joy expected,
as we seek blindly in the pursuit of happiness.
We mark time with these pursuits,
each the excitement of wanting and achieving,
but it soon becomes obvious it fades quickly
and we continue the cycle,
in seeking that which will make us happy.
Possessions, status, notoriety or power
are empty vessels, as none make us better, or happy,
they are simply a change of circumstance,
clothing over the real us, wanting,
because happiness isn’t derived but decided.
In these pursuits we soon become lost,
the cycle endlessly repeated,
and each time, each striving but an empty result,
no answer to what we really need,
and that is to appreciate what we have, completely.
It is in appreciation of our circumstance
that acceptance gives rise to change, what we want,
but that has nothing to do with happiness,
for that is innately possible
from a decision to be happy, regardless.
Those stepping stones are familiar aren’t they,
looking forward to this or that,
things that we think will give us joy and happiness,
but without the acceptance of the moment,
the circumstances of our lives, happiness is elusive?
We must crease depending upon aspects of life
to afford happiness, because the truth is they will not:
not being a billionaire, a rock star,
a home owner or driving a new car
will gives us what we need.
What we need is to recognise these cycles
and decide to be a happy, positive person,
regardless of circumstances,
and in the acceptance of now we may flourish,
and if change is wanted, it is then possible.
We may blame life for all our perceived
inadequate circumstances, but the truth is
we are the ones who created them,
and the sooner we realize that blame is pointless,
the sooner we can decide to live in happiness,
rather that the endless cycles
of pursuing empty dreams.

Most poignant and inspiring verse. Life must always be lived to the fullest and there must be joy found in each day we live.
Glad you related and enjoyed the piece Rasma, take care my friend. Cheers!
