Timeless Mountains

Jagged mountains
reach yearningly into the sky,
and clouds assume
their hovering accouterments,
like white halos on white clad spires,
and birds dare not to fly this high,
where breath is a burden
as the sky repeals its deepest blue
to ride, those relentless currents.
So high no breath avows the giving,
and silence bears the weight of time,
as weather changes so unpredictably,
in rhythms of cycles vetted
by those spirits of the mountain climb,
those who dare life,
intrepid they are in ascension,
grateful they are in descent,
alive to tell tales of sublime victory, realised.
And those mountains,
like guardians of time’s sculpting,
arrive in heaven’s gaze,
a vestige of the natural world empowered,
strong and enduring landscapes vowed
of beauty and death combined,
winters caps so white conveyed,
their scope so awe inspiring,
their peril hidden beneath
a veiled vision in purity’s eye.
Such a miraculous vista,
sweeping clouds across such stoic peaks,
as pointed breasts of mother earth,
crested white relief, before an endless blue,
so unique these jagged mountains,
so dreamed for all they are,
and those who dare to climb them,
a wondrous feat of endurance,
a soul breaking feat of persistence, they are.
So timeless these mountains,
born at the beginning of time, itself,
so impressive, so resilient,
no other vista can take
from their inspiring mystique,
their beauty kept of heart,
their vision remaining forever
when seen from a climber’s viewpoint,
standing at the base, an intrepid start.

Oh how I love mountains, visions so beautiful they hide the treacherous dangers within. Such majestic creations you describe command respect at the threat of death. Beautiful piece, Tony, and imagery that makes the mind and spirit soar so far above. Beautiful indeed.
Thank you Phyllis, so pleased you enjoyed it. They are majestic forms that certainly demand respect. I remember so clearly my time in the Swiss Alps, so magnificent and breathtaking. Cheers dear poet.
