Portrait of a Leader…a sad truth

The ego or persona is unique,
a culmination of all our learning and experience
blended with the essence of who we are,
a genetic bundle of attributes and predilections
that frame us generally, in the eyes of others.
The problem with the ego is its expression,
too little and we are ineffective, weak and vulnerable,
too much and we become ruthless, self-serving
and so focused on our being,
we neglect all else in our pursuits of gain.
Most human beings exhibit many aspects of both extremes,
often insecure and vulnerable, sometimes
empowered with self-confidence
and driven to accomplish by an internal rhetoric of self-belief,
that can so easily separate us from reality.
The more accomplished a person is
the more obvious the ego, the confidence
in handling themselves in any given circumstance,
but it is when that persona becomes unrealistically righteous
and demanding of respect, that problems occur.
Bloated self-belief can be a blinding of truth,
and in that, expressions of confidence
that are not grounded in reality,
but a fantasy of who they are and what they can achieve;
for those people, the world is just a pawn to their will.
To these extremes many leaders appear,
in truth they can be psychopaths rather than
balanced individuals of great capability,
and within their tenure the development of personal beliefs
and agendas, rather than the responsibility of their office.
Driven by an inflated self-confidence they become
puppets to their true selves, usually narcissistic,
often amoral and too self-involved to be truly intelligent,
or at least act in a manner of common sense,
instead flaunting lies to support their believed status.
The reality is they are inept,
driven to an almost insanity to uphold
their outrageous belief in self,
and to that end they are failing souls,
deluded in their self-belief and capabilities,
and wanting in any form of compassion or understanding.
How do we allow such people to assume office,
to lead us in any sane setting,
allow them to perpetrate racism and segregation,
war and annihilation while supporting the lies
of class and wealth, to keep the masses preoccupied,
while they do exactly what benefits them most.
It is a sad day when we look upon our leaders
and know for whom they support, for it isn’t us.
