The Jungle Came to Me

By candlelight shadows dance upon the wall,
like moving through a forest tall,
where light filters through the heavens,
shards upon the floor like ethereal ribbons,
as light dictates the dance,
the movement entranced by an invisible force,
sways to a silent melody.
And drums echo in my mind,
the kind that ring with ominous plight,
a sense of danger all around,
as if eyes watch from behind foliage,
painted faces and blow-darts armed,
still and out of sight,
as the drums build with intensity.
One candle flame, flickering,
one mind entrapped by night,
and all is quiet, all is right as it should,
as thoughts radiate like a lighthouse,
projecting onto walls in search of tales,
written on an open mind,
so free in timeless array.
The dance is rhythmic, the flame awry,
as if a spirit guides it in the room,
and figures appear everywhere,
their frantic dance so passion filled,
I can but fear the high, the climactic rise
coming as the drums inspired,
echo loud and boom.
Then voices so manic and trill,
seem to taunt the flame even more,
as the figures faster circle, nearer,
clearer I can see their dark painted faces,
the spears in hand a jabbing,
eyes wild, stabbing the air,
as fever pitch a crescendo.
Then the dancing stops,
the cries and drums all cease,
it is as if they all stare at me,
the flame now still, the dance complete,
and I in stunned expression,
feel those burning eyes,
waiting for a response.
But then, the shadows fade,
and I alone by candlelight,
close my eyes from fright,
the night the jungle came to me,
and I the flame’s heart did see
the other side of my mind,
where reality is blind.

Wow ! A powerful dream, high energy and frightening, but not a threat. It seems the darkness, dance, music and and fire is a symbolic message that only you have the answer to – thus, they were waiting. Dancing in the shadows, playing with fire. Very compelling and well penned piece, Tony.
Glad you enjoyed it Phyllis, ah the mind is a complex thing. Take care
