Nature and Nurture

The mind complies with steadfast resolution,
to all that has been experienced, paid in restitution,
as we are sponges, able to hold so much,
yet what we decide to remember
is as much about our intentions
rather than the subject matter.
Innate our gifts, our propensities and nature,
born yet yielded to our experience and nurture,
and who we are innately may supersede our wishes,
strong our essence, our possible breaches
finding purchase in our manifest world,
our inclinations who we are.
We grow with a moral compass,
vastly varied and unique in nature,
and by that paradigm we hold
all our ideas and actions, vetted to mold our world
to what’s expected, what we accept as right,
within the multi-divergent views of life.
And what we are, how we respond,
how we accept and deny, how we choose and allay our fears,
are ultimately choices we make,
but born of our nature and subjective,
as we grow and assimilate,
and by expression learn to justify.
Ultimately we are not governed by anything,
because choice is always ours,
but most bow to their predilections,
as they flow from the tongue without resistance,
and we can be lazy beings,
honoring past without thought or compromise.
So both nature and nurture can effect life,
but better is the opportunity to see moments unique
and deal cleanly with circumstance,
understanding each one individually,
without bias or being color cast,
as that creates a future not bound by past.
To understand oneself, to know one’s leanings and biases,
gives us the opportunity to learn,
to change and face life anew each day,
and in that way creating an unknown future of potential,
not tethered to what we think we know
but free in its pathways of learning and ascension.

Great life lesson, Tony. By reading your work I am able to see more potential ahead for me instead of unknown fears. Nicely penned and a joy to read. Well done.
Glad it inspired Phyllis, take care dear poet.
