The Seven

Into the fray the seven stormed,
battle weary and mind forlorn,
drenched in the blood of the fallen,
unrelenting to a fate they’d sworn.
And muscles ached and sweat forsaken,
as if life with every drop was waning,
yet no blood spilled, their lives not taken,
as they harvested souls by dozens.
The invincible seven on a field of death,
could not die, but heart bereft,
as blades so soaked in blood adrift,
splattered red across eyes so fixed.
With every parry and final blow,
as opened flesh in fate now sewn,
fell to quiet and wretched loss,
another life, another cost.
As the clatter of steel and cries of pain,
echoed hard across the plain,
slowly death in mounds did wane,
as the battle erred to silence.
Breathless, the seven barely standing,
panting like animals, anointed in blood,
as if the battle a bad dream done,
now released they were from their troth.
As bodies so pained, somehow unscathed,
stood to witness what they had done,
another battle fought and won,
the faces of the fallen forever etched in nightmares.
Questioned they of this pointless day,
when death attested life’s betrayal,
and who then toasts the battle’s way,
for any kind of reason.
The seven dropped their swords, walked away,
never to fight another day,
trying to forget what debt they’ll pay,
when judgement finally finds them.
And home they sought, to their loved ones,
where kindness may placate the darkness inside,
where life and death, the great divide,
will echo in their minds,
til the end of time.

A great poetic story of battle. Such mighty men the seven are, who stayed faithful to their sworn duty. Excellent phrasing, very emotive and a pleasure to read. Well done, Tony.
Much appreciated Phyllis, glad you enjoyed it: I do relate to battle scenes, must have been a past life thing. Cheers!
This was an enjoyable read, Tony. The invincible seven was quite a captivating subject, and I loved the parry and thrust of the rhythm.
Glad you enjoyed it John, Cheers!
