Against All Odds, Life

Slivered thin too fine for eyes to see,
a microscope revelation,
as life agrees or tainted grows from seed
to full blown malignancy,
and life teeters at the edge of death,
a ticking clock in thunderous tones,
as the scales weigh the possibilities,
and hope like a fulcrum waits
to see the sentence pronounced.
Oh tender the moments of love and memory,
brought to bare in facing death,
a rush of joys once felt, perhaps never felt again,
as darkness penetrates
and grows to decimate a flesh so delicate,
vulnerable and in last defense,
pleading in prayer and in circumstance
to somehow find a miracle,
a reprieve from a slow and painful demise.
Cells so small we cannot see,
direct an army, a cavalry of stampeding darkness,
malevolent, uncompromising infiltration,
and as it grows it strangles every living cell
to submit to its annihilation,
dismembered cells torn to refuse,
in the shadow of darkness,
and we in knowing of its cruel degrees,
can only hope for science.
In mind we can face this marauder,
not by rejection, not by contention, but acceptance
and a quiet affirmation to see it gone,
in purification a body cleansed,
as the darkness does not belong,
when we agree and not forego our want,
but allow the dark cells to leave,
as light becomes a circumstance
within which they cannot abide, and we may survive.
Death is our ultimate reality,
but when, is up to us,
and a world filled with plans and projections
just makes a life continue, for it is created in thought,
and giving up just agrees with death,
but we haven’t finished yet,
so allow life to take its course,
but make it known what you will
and let light bathe you in promise.

Beautifully written verse of death, the certain stage we will all eventually reach in life. Never giving up, to always fill life with plans, love and kindness will keep us alive and spiritually growing. This is very fine work, Tony, filled with hope and promise with your words in the last stanza. Remarkable and memorable. Great work dear poet.
Much appreciated Phyllis, glad enjoyed the work. Cheers!
