Summer’s Sizzle…my daily report

Heat brings lethargy,
animals strewn across the floor,
on backs, inelegantly splayed out,
trying to keep the temperature at bay,
and air pumping in cool reprise,
struggles to overcome nature’s affront,
when summer days are blunt and burdened
by a heavy dull discomfort.
And silence screams with frustration,
as empty streets attest the oppression,
listless breezes in faint-hearted plea,
fade into the desolation,
and going out is discouraged,
necessity guides that step,
when summer marks its territory,
and we are found inept.
As the heat rises to an afternoon zenith,
the air-conditioning struggles,
and its relieving radiation is smaller,
as eternal war prevails,
but nature always wins,
and time slows to a dreary blur,
and focus is so maligned
it cannot deter the heat in mind.
So I write, my fan chugging along,
like a broom sweeping the hot air toward me,
and only if I sweat I feel the cool,
but alas the heat is so dry
it swallows whole the drips from taps,
and I, blustered by a drying breeze
feel like I’m wearing a heavy coat,
a fevered brow from some disease.
But words find their way to the page,
this torture I can hold, momentarily,
perhaps long enough to finish,
then find the air-con, just in time to save me,
on this summers day without joy,
oppressive notes of nature’s ploy,
a passing heated despair,
that I pray will not last too long.

Holy moly – that is a tortuous heat for sure ! Fine weather report Tony. It is 1:30 AM here and I am sitting at my desk with a warm jacket on. I just sent out the newsletter, so will be hitting my cozy bed in a few minutes. Hope you drink lots of fluids to keep hydrated (water is best). Do take care dear friend.
Thanks Phyllis, yes it is torturous as the night temps aren’t that much lower. Hydration is a must. take care Phyllis.
