What a Simple Dove Can Teach Us

The flighted dove knows not its beauty,
aloft in freedom its pure understanding,
and in survival it is drawn
to all that keeps its life a perfect dream,
but does it yearn for more in slumber’s claws,
does it wish for halcyon days of youth
or flawless summers gone,
or perhaps it thinks not in time, of past or rhyme,
just a simple awareness of being.
While we flail in abject fear and confusion,
a simple dove just is, being exactly what it’s always been,
and without the need to find itself, as we,
this bird is found and lives in experience of it,
caring not to consider anything else,
just maintaining its needs,
in care and as an intuitive being
it knows where and what to do each day,
and no confusion placates its intent.
How judgemental we are, claiming
our superiority, when a dove has already achieved
much of what we so ardently seek,
to understand ourselves, to connect with the natural world,
to be completely self-sufficient,
and to know the joys of being,
of flight and a symbiotic life with its environment,
all profoundly and naturally experienced
without qualm or reservation.
Those who judge nature,
see only through their own colored glasses,
see little of truth, little of the potential of all life,
and in that judgement we hold humanity back,
our arrogance in thinking we are better,
more advanced as beings,
neglects to see what we have not,
as technology cannot saves us,
when we war, strive but struggle to find happiness.
The assimilation of the natural world
shows us how careless and arrogant we are,
as we destroy, deplete and create imbalance,
all for selfish reasons, and without understanding;
a dove may be just a bird,
but on many levels it far outshines us
in its natural achievements,
and its innate beauty is to be admired,
for most of what it is, is what we truly seek.

Perfectly said Tony: “to know the joys of being”. How much more simple and joyful life would be if we stop struggling and just have an awareness of being. Pure simplicity and love of life and all of nature. Marvelous piece. Thank you. Take care. x
Much appreciated Phyllis, hope you’re feeling better and recovering, Take care. x
