Secrets Rising with the Hunger

Rumors…
Murmurs in huddled masses…
Myths…
Stories of darkness and chaos…
Secrets rising with the hunger
Tales of white-knuckle terror
Predators being preyed upon
Heroes cloaked in the mantles of wolves
Brigands woven into the blackness of night
Stiletto stares and endless eyes
Sharpened and deadly
Killers…
Their legacy…
Long thought buried and hidden away
Systematically eradicated
Erased with the silence of time
Hunters with heavy thumbs
Weighing on the scales of justice
Orwellian trust funds
Exposing the hidden
Drawing out the information
Conjuring the pathways
Those that lead them
To the bloodlines of the ancients
All-powerful races
Beasts without remorse
Pity or impudence
The true believers keep the records
Some say they were all exterminated
In the shadowy battles of forever-time
Where the creatures of myth and fantasy
Clashed at the edges
Of the seats of humankind
Great cities grew atop their ashes
As humankind grew
Their numbers fewer
Until…
Years became decades
And beyond
Generations passed
Age and sanctimony
Belief the battle had finally been won
Yet they waited
Some kept the faith
Adherence to the ways of then
While most just blended with the now
Until those who might resist
Had passed through the veil
Skills lost
The sacred texts left to the elements
Crumbling parchment
And the scratchings of an iron pen
Observations of the timekeepers
The historians and scribes
Called it correctly
As a waiting game
The kind immortals might engage in
Silently rebuilding
Carefully choosing succession
The strong destined to survive
Underground
Yet acutely aware of the hunger
And the return
Of howls in the night
Unexplained disappearances
Night whispering fear
Hunger…
Blood…
And bedlam…

I write about everything and sometimes nothing at all. I'm fascinated by old things, rusty things, abandoned places, or anywhere that a secret might be unearthed. I'm passionate about history and many of my pieces are anchored in one concept of time or another. I've always been a writer, dating back to my youth, but the last decade has been a time of growth for me. I'm continually pushing the limitations of vocabulary, syntax, and descriptive phrasing.

Tense and scary. Excellent phrasing, Ralph, to create a fantastic story. They came to America, from France, hidden in the wilderness and were transported when the Appalacians were created by the collision of two techtonic plates. Well, that is what I read somewhere. Very enjoyable read you have here Ralph.

Very menacing Ralph of darkness and its existence even today. Those myths of past still resonate within us as we are still animals, capable of horrendous crimes against life. Perhaps in other forms, darkness still lurks, awaiting a time to once again create havoc. I guess it is our innate nature and some remain with it on the surface. Nicely penned and with some great phrasing my friend. great work.

Menacing I like that Tony. That is the perfect way to describe the feeling get from this one Ralph. I found myself almost speed reading it, the tempo was that quick, like I was being chased by these predators. Excellent phrasing and definitely kept the horror theme throughout. Nice work Ralph.
