Just Another Summer Day, Reprieve

Just Another Summer's Day, Reprieve
Just Another Summer’s Day, Reprieve

Pale green tendrils like slender curling fingers,
hold with stoic strength the burgeoning vines,
trailing bows and fence like arms at length
delicately poised to absorb that summer light,
their umbrella forms in synchronicity
to face the sun in sacred homage.

Fruit, like soft green pearls
bunched in chandelier profusion,
hang, nectar laden and enticing
parrots, blackbirds and sparrow’s delight,
a sweet offering in the warmth of days,
and a quenching gift to quell the heat.

Grasses parched and brown,
under the dry of bleaching sun
grow paler with the days,
but morning brings a feast for birds,
worms and critters rise before the heat,
and plucked they are for a morning treat.

The sun by mid-morning
sears into the blue desolate sky,
and weighted heat abounds,
as quiet the sounds of daily life
now burrowed in shade and cooler plight,
to bide their time until the evening still.

Silence lays upon the heat,
shimmering roads and quiet relief
in homes and shops
where cool air greets the weary traveler,
and summer deals its poignant hand,
mother’s mood, just another fickle stand.

The ominous quiet resounds,
in deafening sounds of yielding,
the summer swell of heat and hellish discomfort,
for those on foot to glean their needs
finds its mark in slow progression
amid the sweltering congestion of pleas.

Just another summer’s day,
a burden for some, a time to pray for release,
when the silent oppressive day
is far too hot for comfort,
and we just wait for the gloaming ease,
a gully breeze to cool our sweated brow.

I can almost feel the unforgiving heat on bare arms, but that early morn time is idyllic. I bet that breeze in the gloaming is like a cool damp cloth caressing the brow. Such a pleasure, Tony, the way you can imbue your reader with the feeling of the day. Great work, dear poet. Take care.
