By the Sea, in Filegree

The sea surges and attests the shore
with white crested touch,
relentless waves of leaping foamy tufts
of life in manifest,
as time abides its rush,
each wave a progression,
each ebb drawn to gather
a new waves trough,
until it too rises to strike the shore.
How mesmerising this continuum,
etched in our minds for all its beauty,
as water finds its own way,
its own play of movement,
in joyous swirling, leaping, twirling
like pristine white ballerinas,
each form and posture unique and never repeated,
as life embraces itself,
shares it rich and sagacious thoughts.
For hours I can be still and silent,
when eyes are open wide,
imbibing this rolling wonder,
and the peace it evokes is astounding,
founding a calm unrivaled in my world,
so I just reject time, and feel the breeze,
the salt upon my tongue,
and know that life is eternal,
its movement as my own heart beating.
A gull cries overhead,
a blissful bleating as it hovers as if still,
freedom’s meeting with reality,
and I embrace its feeling, reeling
as if caught between serenity and dreams,
gleaning life from without,
like my mind is flying too,
and I cannot but wonder
how this all can be true, this fluid perfection.
Upon the dappled horizon,
the sea it choppy,
and fishing boats like corks bob up and down,
their nets dragging life to a hungry man’s table,
and I see the balance, the just calling,
as life ensues, and death endures each day,
for who am I to question the play, the survival,
in this rhythm of life
within which I remain.

Oh how I love to watch the sea and your poem brings it back to me so vividly. I really miss the coastal areas of California and the Pacific Northwest, so your poem brings it all back to me. Your vivid imagery and phrasing is wonderful and I can hear the waves, smell the sea air, taste the salt. Such great work and an enjoyable read Tony.
Thanks Phyllis, yes I love the sea too and have lived at its shore. I don’t now as its too expensive, but I still yearn for the sea. So pleased you enjoyed it Phyllis. Cheers!
