A Poetic View of New York City…

A poetic view of new york city

A POETIC VIEW OF NEW YORK CITY…….

The first glimpse is a surreal treat for the eyes

of this city where lights are never dimmed,

as if it is the gateway to a totally different world

which at the same time both intoxicates and intimidates,

where man’s skill and flawless craftsmanship reach

the closest of being hailed as divine.

Towering buildings jovially shoulder each other

creating the scintillating skyline,

each bearing its architect’s unique signature

and irrefutable proof of expertise,

standing tall as if carrying the tale of his triumphs

from the dust on this earth to heaven’s crest.

People of different origins and destinations

diversify the crowded sidewalks,

each engaged in pursuing one of the many paths

to find their own slice of happiness,

as a stream of never ending traffic suffocate the roads

with perpetual honks that dissolve in the din.

The thundering noise of speedy subway trains

erupts from below at regular intervals,

and the appetizing aroma of a variety of street foods

tingles the surrounding air,

while rows of elite stores beckon from both sides

with price tags true to their heritage.

Through the lenses of scrutiny, it can be seen

that this too is a land of extremes,

there are many here who live in luxurious mansions

and there are homeless begging on the streets,

there are many who trade in billions each moment

and those who struggle to make ends meet.

It seems as if every nook and corner

is wearing multicolored layers of festivity,

the fragments of sky not eclipsed by the buildings

are as rare as vacant patches in this city,

as some dreams get woven and some are buried

within these skyscrapers stretching endlessly.

A very descriptive piece Anjana, filled with fine imagery and from the heart a rendering of a city much revered for its uniqueness and diversity. I’ve not traveled to New York as yet, but I’d love to and your work certainly entices me more. Well done my friend. Love it!

Oh, by the way if you choose the text tab in the edit page, you can delete any unwanted spaces at the bottom after your poem, or anywhere else for that matter. That view shows you where unwanted spaces are. Cheers!

As a lover of the Rocky Mountains this piece almost makes me want to travel to New York City – almost. Not a city lover by any means, but you poem paints a beautiful picture. Awesome piece Anjana.

How true this is. NYC can make or break you in an instant. With its impeccable architectural genius to the bum in the subway, it seems as though everything plays a part in the machine that is the city. It is true that the city never sleeps. I love going there every couple months to take in everything. It really is sensory overload. Excellent piece my friend. Loved it.
