The Sad Refrain of Those Who Betray Themselves

She left a rose upon the table,
wilted and colorless,
and in her pallid complexion
the mirror of her heart,
lost, so lost in direction,
I could see her choices waning,
her soul aching,
yet blinkered her view,
her reasoning a catharsis.
She new not of why,
but supported a shallow blaming,
and deep in her soul was a gaping hole,
an incomplete hope she was sustaining,
and so she fashioned her escape,
a steadfast reasoning of lies,
to uphold the falsehoods she told herself,
the world owing her the life she deserved,
or so she surmised.
In the delusions of the shadows she procured,
she pretended release,
yet that hole ensued, that feeling never ceased,
so she filled herself with material gain,
advantages she had always expected,
but in the sacrifice her heart was rejected,
for that was never in play,
put aside for another day,
but in truth, disconnected.
Her smile is weak, her delusions strong,
as gaining what she felt belonged,
did not fill that hole,
and sooner or later unhappiness will reveal,
material things are just that,
no path of fulfillment, no placating a soul,
just an empty paradigm,
that in taking its toll will never replace love,
just follow a pointless path.
She became mean, malicious and hurtful,
just to protect herself against the truth,
and she must lie in the bed she made,
unhappy, unfulfilled and betraying herself
for all the secrets, the ploys of hurt
against those who know the truth,
the foolish choices she makes a ruse,
and deeper that emptiness becomes,
as darkness and loss fills her tragedy.

How sad. If only she could have been true to herself, allowed love to fill her heart so she could reach out with honest and true love to fill another heart with love. Very nicely penned, Tony, about one who could not realize truths and love. Well done.
So many cannot face themselves, the truth just too difficult to accept, yet they also hurt others just to support the delusions. It is sad. Glad you relate my friend. Take care Phyllis.
