When Love Was Not Enough…CONTO 1

When Love Was Not Enough...CONTO 1
When Love Was Not Enough…CONTO 1

CONTO 1
On a cliff top so far above the sea,
a creature sat forlorn,
the wind like a precious soothing hand,
did try to stave off his broken heart,
the solace he so sought,
but his mind filled with torturous loss,
could not be restored,
for that sea had taken his loving wife,
in a cruel and vengeful storm.

No purpose he could attest,
his breath now a wasted breath,
as pain just sat upon his heart,
each moment a stirring anger start
to somehow quell the emptiness,
the agony imparted to a lost and lonely soul,
bereft of the love he so imbibed,
each minute of his life a joy,
a soul in song derived.

He peered down upon the ragged cliff,
the jagged broken stones adrift,
and pledged himself to join his bride,
to dull this endless pain inside
and finally find some peace,
but as he edged toward abyss,
he heard a sound, a familiar voice,
and looked down upon the sand,
waves crashing in turbulent flow.

He blinked to prove reality,
his eyes somehow a trick, a disparity,
’twas her, his beloved, amid those crashing waves,
so he scurried back along the path,
in frantic elation, his dreams impart,
impossibility he was willing to accept,
to open up his heart,
and as he reached the sand,
close enough to see the truth, he stood aghast.

‘Twas she, at the edge of the shore,
but more, she was a mermaid,
her glistening tail swishing in the waves,
yet her face as always, in loving glow,
to show she was his one true love;
he, in shock, met her on the sand,
and they embraced, awkwardly,
yet hearts entwined,
an expectation lined with doubt.

Saved she’d been, beneath the waves,
and on a full moon given back a life,
but not of the land,
and she begged him to join her,
released from pain and human misery,
to live in the beauty of the sea;
her dark brown eyes so beguiling,
her tender cold touch confusing,
and he hesitated, scared of all the unknown.

She sensed his reticence,
her heart sank, her hopes for union dashed,
as she could see in his eyes,
he could not leave, his mind filled with lies,
and she let go his hand,
the salty sea slowly dragging her away,
and he in tears, unable to trust her resolve,
the love they had not enough,
as she disappeared.

To this day, that creature sits upon a cliff top,
regretting his lack of courage, to change,
and even love was not enough
to free himself from his own bondage,
his fears his life did claim,
and she, beneath the waves lived in joy,
accepting a new beginning,
yet missing her once true love,
parted by fear and misgivings.

A sad tale indeed. The loss of his beloved and the fear of giving up all he knows to dive into unknown waters is a mind torture for sure. For her it was an accident when she died, yet a rebirth in new waters where she now has a new life – but, for him it is a choice, a difficult decision he has to make to leave one life and start another new one he is unsure of. He chose to lose her for a second time – but, maybe there is a new life for him, too. Is there a Conto Two? She is now happy, I hope he will also find happiness. Nicely penned story, Tony.

Glad you enjoyed it Phyllis; we often choose not to take risks out of fear, and that is the consequences we must deal with. We limit our lives by what we believe. Yes, a CONTO 2 is brewing. Take care.
