Maintaining Emotional Balance

Without reservation
I encumber my choices with reason,
untethered from the will of ego
and open to peripheral views of scope,
for I have learned from the benefit of hindsight,
the expense of non-consideration,
and the hurt that can ensue
from not seeing the whole of our choices
and their impact.
We are not alone in life,
surrounded by people with whom we share,
and selfishly we often create circumstances
that put our closest allies at risk,
non-thinking that although right for us,
our choices can harm those we love,
by circumstance or a roll on effect,
and before we make such tenuous choices,
we should first consider the possibilities.
Emotions often speak too soon,
and in their venting anger can create problems,
as knee-jerk responses always do,
so it is wise to take a breath and consider
the ramifications of freely expressing pent up issues
in the heat of a moment, rather calm down,
think it through and know when to question,
rather than spew out the negative,
just for the sake of purging.
A great deal of human misery
comes from uncontrolled emotions,
let loose by need rather than want,
and in the travail of life’s course,
it is prudent to learn a modicum of control,
instead of rolling the dice,
not knowing what will follow
our rash expressions,
and exactly where it will take us.
I try to maintain balance,
although it is often difficult,
but equilibrium is a far better state
in which to abide,
calmly assessing circumstance before jumping in
out of response, not consideration,
and in this way we see more profoundly,
situations that can be de-escalated
rather than intensified.

Very well said, Tony. Blurting out words that hurt and emotions have caused is so often damaging to others as well as the self. I found this out the hard way and know how important it is to take a breath to calm down before speaking. Great work, and thanks for sharing.
My pleasure, yes, its an important lessons we all must learn. Glad you enjoyed it Phyllis.
