The Human Struggle to Find Self

Grasping reality,
is like trying to hold one single piece of dust
floating in an endless dust-storm,
swirling in some random shard of light,
and the more I see and know of possibility,
the less I can grasp realities that seem
far less finite than I’d want,
far more intriguing than I expected
and just as illusive as my dreams.
We are babes in arms,
relatively helpless and infantile
in our arrogant knowing,
when we know so little,
the circumstances of our lives
so superficial in the cradled arms of life,
where even imagination cannot deliver
the most profound truths,
the fundamental fabric of existence.
Consciousness is a trap,
a limited awareness of superficiality,
where proof is long coming,
and belief in fractious denial
consumes our minds with alarming outcomes,
that so often keep us
on the back foot of innovation,
driven by all the wrong assumptions,
and claiming creativity our deliverance.
At least quantum physics is trailblazing,
thinking outside the well worn boxes
of our predecessors,
and the world suddenly seems small,
we, so insignificant amid eternal existence,
and our rationale so minimalistic,
we must be seen as naive,
when viewed from an omniscient vantage,
or even that of our galactic neighbors.
In short, we should be humbled by life,
with all its secrets and scope,
ever entreating us to delve deeper into ourselves,
to know with some certainty
this journey has purpose and direction,
despite our attempts and ineptitude
to prove one thing or another;
and so it goes, in endless array,
the human struggle to find self.

It is certainly not a smooth road to find self, and like the cells within us constantly change to keep us healthy, so do we change to develop our ways of protection or acceptance in regards to emotions, possibilities and life in general. I have read that human cells are all completely renewed every seven years – that is part of their story. Our story is really never-ending. We are not a completely new person every seven years, but changes have made us wiser and better able to cope with our realities. Still, as you say, trying to grasp reality is like trying to hold one single piece of dust. Hmmm … here you have set me to deep thinking with this and your previous piece on the time warp. Great works, Tony.
Glad it makes you think, Phyllis, we are all too quick to assume reality, as comfortable as that may see. Yet we see so little and life is infinite. Cheers!
