Day and Night’s Disagreement

Day and Night's Disagreement
Day and Night’s Disagreement

As if night did encroach on day,
push aside those gloaming rays
and demand its dark presence,
as stars did falter, too early to shine,
forced into an ebony sky too soon,
and moon looked on in disarray,
glued to horizon too fast decayed,
and wondered what night had said
to force such change.

So arrogant the night,
its light studded show
too afferent to ignore, and more,
what right to take the time from day,
its favorite golden light display;
so angered the day, but too weak to complain
as its embers fade away,
swallowed by the greedy night,
a mournful and malicious plight.

Sad and dejected the day receded,
moon did rise but barely needed,
and day dreamed of vengeful ways,
to stave the greed of night,
and prove once and for all,
day was the life giver,
night merely the time of rest,
and at day’s behest
a plan to end this play.

So at 4.32pm the sun did remain,
time agreed to stage an intervention,
and night all ready to cut into sky,
darkness reign and gloaming hide,
when light did ruin its tune,
and night did scream in frustration,
sunset vast with no cessation,
as night reconsidered its view,
and a cease fire ensued.

In mediation the moon took charge,
and offered a simple solution,
each seasonal day would rotate
short to long and longer,
so day and night could reign at times,
but never once take over,
and day and night agreed,
and ever more they greet one another
with respect.

Very well penned verse, Tony, great phrasing. I see day and night not as contention, but as a melding of two souls supporting each other in the continuity of life – as if one soul dearly loves the other, but both on separate paths, well, the same path, yet different times. hmmm … I must be in a loving or philosophical mood tonight. Great work as always, dear poet.
