Potential Works Both Ways
In the very core of us lies the truth,
who we are, our failings and potential ensues,
and we may aspire for betterment,
pious in every way, yet, potential works both ways,
and the reality of our darkness can confuse,
as unleashed it can ravage lives,
like a demon transcribes reality,
and our pious state a ruse.
Once opened darkness is powerful,
a perspective that inspires itself,
until every thought is tainted,
every action emoted in the cold heartless state
of the shadow self,
aspiring not betterment, but gain,
and what goodness remains, fades,
as life itself changes for the worst.
I have seen so many fall for the darkness,
that potential that lies within,
and there is no saving them once it begins,
because their righteous belief about themselves is twisted,
so deluded, they think distorted,
and the world must comply with them,
for they know better, see more clearly
in their delusions of self.
I deal with them every day,
watch with sorrow their damaging attitudes,
and how they use people to acquire what they need,
superficial values, advantage the very seed of choice,
and they think they know the world,
without love, without giving freely,
so they abide their cage,
the walls they erect in defense of reality.
Who we are is potential,
what we are and will become are choices we make,
yet without love, who can we be,
except lost in a harsh world of striving,
to acquire superficial possessions
that create no happiness, just the conflict of gaining,
where peace lies within a heart of love,
joy the gift of sharing.
