Education and Our Future

How persecuted we are being wrong,
when right is so expected as convention,
yet it is creativity that has always been the key
to advancement, and wrong
the challenge of aspiration.
How we demean mistakes,
the measure of failure in learning,
when the creative mind is about innovation,
getting it wrong the slow honing of perfection,
and the discovery of new ways to think.
Education is destroying creativity,
suppressing the innate talents of children
to be measured against subjects that are important,
but far less important than encouraging
artistic and creative pursuits for individual growth.
We are not all accountants, doctors or linguists,
but we may well be artists, dancers or musicians
if given the opportunity to excel,
and in any endeavor, a creative mind
is what drives all these careers to greater heights.
Artistic pursuits have always been played down
in education throughout the world,
a sad indication of how blinded we are by technology,
and how our sensibilities are being eroded
in the light of systems that are crushing
individuality and expression.
We are all something of great potential,
and being deprived of that
to become a prerequisite of our assumed future,
is a travesty of monumental proportions;
let out children dance, paint, explore nature and be whole,
rather than another technological input.
Creativity is our future,
and artistic expression our soul,
and spirituality the key to fathoming this physical life,
do not let hearts be dulled, voiced be unheard,
and the love of expression be dismissed
in light of systems that desensitize our children.

I so agree with you, Tony. Focus in education is not creativity, and certainly there is no self-worth or spirituality involved, rather it seems political and geared towards power, materialism, open borders, and lack of patriotism. Great and well penned work.
Reading this verse makes me think of Lee Ann Womack’s song ‘I Hope You Dance’.

Exactly Phyllis, if we’re dancers we should dance and these days we are pushed to become lawyers or accountants, so stifling our natural paths. Glad you related . Cheers!
