Chosen Ignorance

The malaise of ignorance
is far worse than the anticipation of truth,
although we may suffer reality,
and ignorance can be a deluded comfort,
yet some relish in the familiarity of ignorance,
a blind refusal to face themselves
with all their imperfections and mistakes,
rather, create delusions of want,
and in ignorance feel safe.
Thus the common earthling,
so entangled in physical life
they cannot see past their noses,
cannot assimilate reality at their own expense,
and thus revel in the illusive worlds they fashion,
in which they are always right,
they are more informed, of greater quality
and therefore superior to most people,
regardless of the circumstances in which they abide.
Conversing with these people
is somewhat superficial,
for there is no more, no deeper level of communication,
for they are removed, stagnant
and never open to anything except opportunity
to advance their physical life, status and wealth,
for beyond that they are a desert dry,
their perspective blinkered by self-interest,
and therefore dull, in terms of intellectuality and spirituality.
I feel pity for the earthling,
their horizons so narrow and colorless,
their intent so self-absorbed
they wish no goodness, no caring,
no positive affirmations of life,
of the natural world or people in general,
they being the center of their universe,
the key to all experience, self,
and so love escapes them in their striving.
When faced with real life drama,
earthlings fall to pieces,
as they are not accustomed to being without control,
and therefore find pity for the self and blame
to redirect responsibility, and play the victim,
as is their mission statement,
all for the want of truth, they suffer,
yet reject it at every turn,
because in the end they are not brave.

A lot of people I know are “entangled in physical life”, so much so that they suffer greatly if they don’t get what they want, or don’t have enough material possessions. I have often been told that someone feels sorry for me because I don’t have much (material items), my response is “I am spiritually happy, content, for I have far more than what you can see.” Some people will just never understand what true treasures are. This is a great piece, Tony, well done. Take care.
So true, we don’t need anything to make us happy, just an open heart and the choice of peace and contentment. So pleased you enjoyed it Phyllis.
