The Cheating of the Heart
Cheating of the Heart
I could talk to you all night
Until you’ve changed your mind
Then I’d have your beautiful smile
And we’d be happy for awhile
But you wouldn’t take me back
Truly believing it would last
Sooner or later our differences would come up
You’ve already told me that you don’t think love’s enough
So when we’d start to fight
You’d start thinking you were right
Then the distance between us would start
And we’d be pushed apart
Even though we’d still have love, we’d be alone again
Right back where it all began
The head thinks it is being smart
But, in the end, it only cheats the heart

Nicely penned, Shannon. Disagreements cannot be resolved if one thinks they are always right. Willingness to understand both sides is needed. Well done, Shannon.
I wrote this in college about someone I tried to date and then tried being friends with. Neither worked out in the end. He always had to be right about everything, and I do mean everything. Even the most trivial things that I knew he was wrong as a matter of fact, not opinion. It was like talking to a brick wall trying to express myself and my own thoughts. Funny, though, how, like your comment says, it still applies today in other relationships.
Oooh. I really like this one Shannon. Though sometimes the heart can be a bit pushy. I know the heart wants what the heart wants. Sometimes the brain can make a compelling argument though. Excellent piece
Thanks, Paul. The heart does indeed want what it wants, all logic aside.
Nice work, direct and well penned. Cheers!
Thanks. Have a good night!
