When Love Was Fair

Fair in love…
Such sweet surprise,
what you in mind derive
from my subtle glance,
my raw romance,
this feeling I cannot hide
in morns warm grace;
and you in tune, with shards
bathing our waking souls
to afferent sleepy pursuits,
greeting day with feigned forays
and into love’s embrace.
Glory be these days,
where sun did choose
to bless this room with gold,
and warm bodies writhed
in blankets warm from cold,
until that sigh of release,
sent that room to slumber’s nest,
and I attest that beauty lay beside me;
on these days of morning glory,
where life stood still
and bones awaken in fervent throws,
to rhythms marked in joy.
Such memories when love was sweet,
like honey to the tongue,
and back then nobody won,
just blissfully there and happy,
when time was of no consequence,
and Sunday lasted a week,
and work just held love at bay,
desperate to return and stay by your side,
when love rang out like chapel bells,
and loneliness cried without you,
when I could not breathe,
without the touch of your hand.
