Telluride, Colorado

Photo by Kurt James of Midnight Wind Photography

I am a native Coloradan and have traveled and seen more of the United States than most people in my life. It is, in my humble opinion, there is no place more breathtaking beautiful than the Dallas Divide of the spur of the mighty Rocky Mountains called the San Juan Mountains. What is unique about Telluride is that you cannot drive through it, you can only drive to it. It is the end of the road and the backdrop is something you will have never seen anywhere else in the world. The town itself is nestled in the serenity of San Juan’s mountains. I have tried to make the 6 hour drive ever year from my home in Loveland, Colorado in the middle of October during autumn to capture nature’s handiwork between Ridgway, Colorado and  Telluride, Colorado. My short poem below does not do justice to what one can view. If you or anyone you know gets a chance to visit my state during autumn – tell them Kurt James said, “Go to Telluride, Colorado and he promises you that you will never want to leave.” I love Colorado, I love the people, and I love my mountains.

Telluride
A longing came over me, I must abide
Loaded my pickup for the trip to Telluride
The lord created the earth, but saved it for last
Dallas Divide, marrow of the Earth, he cast
Serenity, happiness there does not elude me,
Among the San Juan Mountains as far as I can see
Nothing created in the world can overshadow
Majestic mountain beauty of Telluride, Colorado

Thanks Paul. Colorado is more than just a home to me, and if you felt the sense of pride then you would be correct. Colorado and everything it has to offers is all and then some more than I could ask for…

I’ve had the opportunity to drive through your beautiful state in the past years. I loved the scenery and the people. This place is picture perfect and you have expressed it so in your reference. Are you also a tour guide? a second profession. lol Your poem is a tribute to this beautiful place Telluride. With a backdrop of majestic mountains, what wouldn’t be? I’ve driven the Rockies many times and they have also always been breathtaking, Colorado is comparable for sure.

LOL – No Vincent I am not a tour guide, although I probably should be. I know this states history better than must historians and I have spent countless hours of the years exploring the rivers, valleys, mountain ranges, mountain passes, and old cemeteries. I have panned for gold, hunted ghost towns. Been 4-wheeling where no 4-wheel should go. Have been in some of the most remote areas of mountains, been on top of a few of the 14ers – 4000 feet above timberline. When I was 15 years old I got lost in the “Lost Creek Wilderness” area on a snowshoe trip at the end of December (Not my brightest or proudest moment). I am glad that you have been able in your life been able to experience some of what Colorado can offer. Thanks for stopping by my friend.

    Kurt,

This is a beautiful poem that also brings out the longing in me to escape to this place you have described as being so free, beautiful, and majestic! Again, I can hear John Denver singing…
