On a Wire…swaying

Twenty five pigeons, sitting on a wire,
plump feathered balls, swaying,
tails dipping in contiguous balance,
like erratic oars, paddling air,
and some preen while others sigh,
sun drenched against an azure sky.
What thoughts arrive, sitting in a row,
feather to feather, colors a glow,
are they waiting for someone to make a move,
that wire gently swaying,
nudged by a silent breeze,
or are they contemplating the space time continuum?
Dark eyes flashing, ever vigilant,
until a truck passes by,
and in one feathered floury, they take to the air,
wings thrashing, a mass of movement,
grays embroidered onto that vast open blue,
until they settle once again, on that wire.
Twenty five pigeons, sitting on a wire,
swaying, rocking, tails paddling,
until they settle, feather to feather.
I wonder what they’re thinking,
preening, sighing, cooing plump balls,
under a nurturing sun, an open sky,
in freedom.

I can hear that sound of a flurry of wings and their cooing as they settle back down on the wire. Kind of seems like life, doesn’t it? All is as it should be then a sudden distraction or disruption sends us into a sudden flight till all is calm again. I like this verse, Tony. It is vivid imagery. Well done.
Thanks Phyllis, it is like life actually, and that thread exists between all living things, those undulations. Pleased you enjoyed it Phyllis, and appreciated your kind comment. Cheers!
I could see them cooing, preening and swinging under the azure sky. A mass of birds on a wire. They may be thinking, lets not head to the Bronx railing balconies because me may become someone’s pigeon stew;-) nicely rhymed and fun verse Tony. Cheers
Thanks Vincent. I have a neighbor who keeps pigeons and they spend their day siting on a wire and taking flight each time a car goes by. I love it, used to have pigeons when I was a kid. Cheers!
Very perceptive and insightful; incredible attention on every minute detail. It must be a wonderous experience being inside your head, Tony!
“On a Wire…Swaying” gives me such a unique experience of living for a few moments through your highly-sensitive and acute awareness. It truly is a privilege to read your poetry.
Thank you for being who you are.
Thank you Tamara, your kind words are very much appreciated. Glad you enjoyed this simple piece. Its the small things in life that enliven our souls to understand more of this dream we call life. Take care.
